Getting a Yahoo! ID
What is a Yahoo! ID?
Your Yahoo! ID is the name of your account with Yahoo!. It gives you access to a variety of services that Yahoo! provide on the Web. Examples of these services include Yahoo! Groups and Yahoo! Messenger.
Your Yahoo! ID has a name that you choose, for example "lois_l". It has a password you choose, for example "joker5", and at least one email address. Your ID can be linked to your email address so that you can use it to access Ayahoo! Groups you have joined with that address. You only need to set up a Yahoo! ID once and it will work for all Yahoo! services, from any computer, until you remove it. To get a Yahoo! ID you need to register.
Registering for a Yahoo! ID
Follow these steps while you are connected to the Internet. To read these instructions as you go, either print out this page or try using the "alt + tab" keys to move from the Yahoo! window to this window.
Note that Yahoo! use both the terms "register for" and "sign up for" to mean the same thing in relation to Yahoo! IDs.
- Go to the Sign up for your Yahoo! ID page (you can also access that page from the Yahoo! Groups Home Page by clicking "Click here to register" or "Register").
-
Complete the form.
Notes for the "Sign up for your Yahoo! ID" page:
- Yahoo! ID – choose a Yahoo! ID that makes your identity clear and reflects who you are in a way that you are comfortable with (you could have that ID for a long time)
- Yahoo! ID – try to make your Yahoo! ID unique (you may be surprised how many of the IDs you try are already taken)
- Yahoo! ID – in your Yahoo! ID, you can use letters, numbers, "-" and "_" but not other punctuation
- password – specify a password that is at least 6 characters long
- password – make a note of the password you specify (keep this in a place that is secure but easy to find again)
- "Alternate Email" – specify your usual email address here; if you are already a member of a Yahoo! Group and you want to access that Yahoo! Group using your Yahoo! ID, specify the email address that you are in that group with (they call it "alternate" as there is an option later to have a Yahoo! address - you don't need to have one, if you don't want to)
- You have a choice to NOT receive promotional emails. Uncheck this box if you wish.
- There is a link to "Help" at the top of the page if you need it.
When you are logged in with your Yahoo! ID, you can edit the information you supplied here at your "Yahoo ID Card". Access this by clicking the "Account Info" link at the top right corner of the screen.
- Click "Submit This Form". Once your registration is completed, you will return to the Yahoo! Groups Home Page.
