The steps for setting up the filter with Outlook are:

  1. make sure you have set up a folder for the List
  2. make you have added the list address to your Contacts
  3. from the menu, choose Tools, Rules Wizard and use the Rules Wizard to create a new rule with these settings:

Test the new filter by making a post to the list.

The steps for setting up the filter with Netscape Messenger (Communicator) are:

  1. make sure you have set up a folder for the List
  2. from the menu, choose Edit, Message Filters, New
  3. in the "Filter Rules" dialog box, create a rule saying "the to of the message is" and specify your list address
  4. set up the filter to "then move to folder" and select the folder you have created
  5. give the filter the same name as your List and folder
  6. test the new filter by making a post to the list

Setting up Filtering using Microsoft Outlook Express 5.x

  • On the Tools menu, point to Message Rules, and then click Mail.
  • On the Mail Rules tab, click New.
  • Select the conditions for your rule by selecting the check box for "Where the To line contains people" in the Conditions section.
  • Select the actions for your rule by selecting the check box for "Move it to the specified folder" in the Actions section.
  • Click the underlined hyperlink: "contains people" and Add: <group-name@yahoogroups.com> [replace with the email address of your group.
    Note: if the group address is in your address book, you can get it from there at this point.
  • Click the underlined hyperlink: "specified" and select (or create if you have not done so, the folder called "group-name", using the exact name is a useful convention.)
  • In the Name of the rule box, "group-name" as the name for your rule, and then click OK.

    The steps for setting up the filter with Microsoft Outlook Express are:

    1. make sure you have set up a folder for the List
    2. make sure you have added the list address to your Address Book
    3. from the menu, choose Tools, Inbox Assistant and Add
    4. click the "to:" button and select the list address from your Address Book
    5. click the "move to" button and select the folder
    6. click "OK"
    7. make sure the new rule has a tick beside it in the "inbox assistant" dialog box
    8. test the new rule by making a post to the list

    Setting up Filtering using Eudora

    The steps for setting up filtering with any version of Eudora Pro (or Eudora Light 3.0.1) are:

    1. Set up a "Mailbox" for the list (note that Eudora has "Mailboxes" which are inside "Folders")
    2. from the "Tools" menu, select "Filters" (you should see the "Filter" window)
    3. click "New" and follow the instructions to complete the "Match" portion of the filter
    4. make sure you have the "incoming" box checked
    5. set the "header" to "To:"
    6. set the next list box to "contains"
    7. in the next text box, type the list address of your list (eg listname@domain)
    8. now specify the "action" to take when mail arrives that matches the criteria you have specified - in the "action" section, choose the action "Transfer to"
    9. select the Mailbox you have created for the list
    10. close the Window saving the changes you have made
    11. test your filter by making a post to the list
